After graduating I worked as an organisations and methods officer, a maths teacher, a careers advisor, a commissioning editor and writer, and an auditor with various organisations, including the National Audit Office. Somewhere along the way I qualified as an accountant, a teacher and a bridge teacher.

I became a pretty decent bridge player, competing in pairs and teams events all over Scotland and sometimes elsewhere. I wrote dozens of bridge articles which were published in various magazines… and co-wrote a book, Why They Win.

Justin was a better player than I was, but I wrote better than he did.
