The Supernatural Experiment is a sort of sequel to Kindred Spirit, in that Cheyne Tully, the ghosthunder introduced in Kindred Spirit, plays an important role inThe Supernatural Experiment. I also wrote the book somewhat tongue in cheek, as the protagonist is a proofreader whose name is Bob Fowler. If you know, you know.
I never got round to writing a proper synopsis for The Supernatural Experiment so here is a brief summary of what it’s all about.
Cheyne Tully is asked to investigate the haunting of Room 3 in Glenroes Manor, a well-know supernatural activity that nobody has ever solved. Tully proposes to conduct an experiment. He will select a group of people who have various characteristics and ask them to spend three nights in the Manor. Which of them is in Room 3 each night he keeps secret. He writes up the history of the haunting and the preparatory work he carries out, ready for his eventual report, and sends the manuscript to Bob Fowler, a proofreader, for checking.
Needless to say I have plenty of fun inventing the history and putting in various technical mistakes for Bob Fowler to find. Everyone ends up going to the Manor, even Fowler, who has been drawn almost against his will into the story.
Once in the Manor the experiment starts. Tully (and Fowler) monitor the rooms the guests are sleeping in, including the infamous Room 3. Strange events do indeed occur. Some of them are captured on camera, some are not. Does Tully solve the mystery of the long history of hauntings? Well, it would be a spoiler to tell you that, but rest assured there’s rather a dramatic and revealing ending.
